Who Pays Photographers? A Listing of Experiences with Magazines and Media.

1:30 PM

Have you ever wondered how much the pros are getting paid for that sporting event, or that feature in a magazine? If you have you likely know that information like that is very hard to come by. Magazines and Other Media carefully guard their pricelists, partly because they are always changing and partly because that’s just the way things have always been done.
new tumblr blog looks to shed some light on the subject by collecting photographer’s experiences with these various media outlets and publishing that information on their website. “Who Pays Photographers” is a new site, but already has some very interesting information. If you are at all curious about professional rates I would check It out.

My Thoughts

I think that this is an awesome idea, but I am very skeptical about how reliable the information provided is going to be. Anyone can go on the site and submit a price, which begs the question – how long can it go until the site is full of a bunch of fake rates? Since there is no verification possible on these submissions, and rates are submitted anonymously how can we trust what we are seeing?
I think that it’s fun to look at, and – at least currently – seems to be sharing some realistic rates. So if you are curious about pro rates head over and check it out. I wouldn’t go emailing these publications and offering your services at the rates you saw though. You only get one chance to make an impression and you don’t want to mess it up by botching your introduction with false information.
